This, one of the most beautiful 17th-century Baroque chateaus in Bohemia, is situated in Prague - Troja. You can find it right next to Prague Zoo, so why not enjoy a visit to something as beautiful and romantic as Troja Chateau.
Work began on the construction of the Early Baroque Troja Chateau began in 1679. The French architect Jean Baptiste Mathey built it for Václav Vojtěch, Count of Šternberk. What is interesting is that the Count of Šternberk did not intend to live in the chateau for any length of time, but wanted it as a suitable place for Emperor Leopold I to relax. However, the Emperor last resided in Prague in 1679 -1680, when the building was still in the early stages, so the Count was able to welcome his son, Emperor Joseph I, to the chateau.
The centre and the dominant feature of the building is the Great Hall, from which there runs a corridor down both sides, with a suite of adjacent lounges. The main room is very attractive, especially because of the extensive fresco decoration on the theme of the Habsburgs’ victory over the Turks at Vienna.
The building as a whole is surrounded by a gorgeous French park with terracotta vases, which is open to the public all day long. There is a grand double staircase decorated with statues leading to it from the chateau. From the park there are some wonderful views not only of the chateau, but also of the surrounding vineyard, with the charming little St. Klára’s Chapel. In the middle of the park there is a fountain, and a garden maze on the edge.
Nowadays Troja Chateau holds a series of interesting exhibitions throughout the year. This is a lovely, unforgettable place. Every woman and girl will feel like a princess, at least for a while, and will see her partner as her knight in shining armour.
