a unique woman…
Milada Horáková (25th December 1901– 27th June 1950) was a Czechoslovak politician who was executed for alleged conspiracy and treason during the communist political trials of the 1950s.
Before the war she worked for the Red Cross and the Women’s National Council, fought for the rights of women, and took a great interest in social matters. During the Nazi occupation she was in the resistance until 1940, when she was arrested by the Gestapo and locked up in Pankrác prison in Prague. From June 1942 to June 1944 she was imprisoned in the Small Fortress in Terezín, from where she was taken to the prison in Dresden and put before the court in October 1944. The original death sentence was commuted to 8 years’ hard labour. The end of the war found her in Aichach women’s prison near Munich.
After the war she again went to work for the Czech National Social Party. She was elected as a Member of Parliament, a position she held until the communist coup in February 1948, when she resigned. All the same, on 27th September 1949 she was arrested as the leader of a movement which was allegedly attempting to overthrow the communist regime. The trial of Milada and twelve of her colleagues began on 31st May 1950 and was staged as a public „political trial“ following the Soviet system. She and three of her colleagues were sentenced to death by hanging. The execution took place on 27th June 1950. She was the only woman executed as part of these trials.
