In 1913, Jan Mikš became the manager and later the owner of the original Kolowrat Brewery in Rychnov nad Kněžnou. He learnt his trade at Smíchov Brewery and completed the Malt School in Prague. Then as a journeyman he worked at Pilsen Prazdroj, afterwards he studied at the Brewery School in Berlin and completed his practical training in the Dreher Company in Budapest.
In 1910 he was an assistant brewer in Zagreb and during his two-year stay in South America he worked in breweries in Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Santiago de Chile and other cities. In Santiago de Chile he met Count Hanuš Kolowrat, who was based there as Ambassador. Their encounter was the catalyst for purchasing the Kolowrat Brewery in Rychnov nad Kněžnou.
In its day Mikš’s enterprise was one of the best medium size breweries, with an annual beer production of 15,000 hl. After 1948 the plant was nationalised, in 1962 beer production ended and a soft drinks company was set up. In the 1993 restitution, the premises returned to the Mikš family who continued drink production. In 2004 Jan Mikš, the current owner, started reconstructing the grounds, aiming to put the buildings into their original condition. The premises are used for drink production, a venue of cultural events and since June 2008, when Městský Podorlický pivovar (brewery company) was founded, attempts have been made to
restore beer production. Today the product range includes soft drinks, musts, spirits and Rychnov beer.
