The town was founded as a guard post on the Prague to Moravia route. The first record of Humpolec is from 1178. The town experienced a boom between the 13th and 15th centuries thanks to silver mining, and from the 15th century also from woollen cloth manufacture.
Today Humpolec offers beautiful historical sites and the attractive landscape of Vysočina. You can take a look at the Art Nouveau Town Hall, Church of St. Nicolas and Jewish Ghetto. Beer lovers might be interested in visiting Humpolec Brewery and tasting Bernard beer. The unforgettable fictitious character of Humpolec, the student Hliník from the famous Czech comedy "Marek, Pass Me the Pen", has a museum and a commemorative plaque here.
