One of the country’s most beautiful 17th-century Baroque chateaus is situated in Prague - Troja. You can find it right next to Prague Zoo.
It was built in 1679 by the French architect Jean Baptiste Mathey for Václav Vojtěch, a count from Šternberk. The central and dominant feature of the whole building is its great hall, from which a corridor runs off on both sides with a suite of adjacent lounges. What catches the eye of everyone visiting this hall is the extensive fresco decorations depicting the victory of the Habsburgs over the Turks in Vienna.
The building is surrounded by a beautiful French park with terracotta vases, which is freely accessible all day. Leading from the chateau to the park is a magnificent double staircase lined with statues. The park offers a wonderful view not only of the chateau, but also of the nearby vineyard with the charming little St. Klára’s Chapel. In the middle of the park there is a fountain and tucked away at the side there is a garden maze.
Nowadays interesting exhibitions are held in Troja Chateau all year round.
