The town of Hlinsko is the centre of the Hlinecko region, which nestles amidst the Bohemian- Moravian Highlands. The hilly landscape here is ideal for anyone who loves walking or cycling.
There are tens of kilometres of marked cycle trails and footpaths which will lead you through many picturesque sights. When travelling in this region you don’t need to bring your bike with you, as cycles can be hired from the Czech Railways bike-hire centre in the railway station.
Hlinsko is not packed with historical monuments, but it is no exaggeration to say that the Betlém conservation zone is unique in Central Europe. This part of the town is full of timbered houses from the mid-19th century, with examples of folk craft workshops (a weaver’s dwelling, a toymaker’s, a cobbler’s workshop). Other attractions include the Municipal Gallery and Museum. The most prominent exhibition in the gallery is the summer “Výtvarné Hlinecko” show, which presents the work of leading Czech artists and has been running for more than fifty years.
The surroundings of Hlinsko also have plenty to offer. Not far from Hlinsko is the only outdoor museum in the Pardubice region, at Veselý Kopec (www.veselykopec. eu). It features exhibitions depicting the life and work of peasant smallholders from the first half of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century. You can also spend a pleasant day playing golf at the nine-hole course in Svobodné Hamry or visit the Vojtěch Lookout Tower about 6 km from Hlinsko and enjoy a wonderful view of the countryside.
